Men, Mums & Minors - The Best Herbs You Never Knew!

Plenary Session (1hr) - Group Presentation with Dawn Whitten and Belinda Robson

In this Plenary Session, three panelists, Dawn Whitten, Daniel Robson and Belinda Robson come together to give their go-to herbal remedies for conditions affecting men, mothers and children.

Dawn Whitten: Dawn will share her experiences with herbs she considers to be standout herbs when working with women and mums. These are herbs that consistently and reliably work, and that she feels are worth highlighting and rediscovering.

Daniel Robson: Health concerns relating to sexual and urinary function are common in men, with an increased prevalence of erectile dysfunction and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) especially seen as men age. A growing body of evidence points to the role of cardiovascular health, metabolic syndrome, and systemic inflammation as important contributors to these conditions, and as such underscores the important role Naturopathic clinicians have in helping men to manage these issues. As a member of this panel, Daniel will discuss herbal medicines not commonly thought of as “male repro herbs” that he finds particularly useful, with the aim to broaden clinicians male reproductive materia medica.

Belinda Robson: Minors represent a tricky cohort to treat for naturopaths and herbalists due to the taste issues associated with liquid mixtures, and inability to swallow capsules. As patients however, children are also vital and responsive to herbs and nutritional intervention. Natural medicine can play a very important role in their acute health care, while also promoting positive long term health outcomes. Childhood is a key time of life for proactive and preventative healthcare, and implementing healthy lifestyle choices that may persist throughout the lifespan. Creativity and flexibility is a key part of successful prescriptions for minors, to be able to move past the taste and form difficulties, and be an effective part of their health care. As a member of this panel Belinda will discuss some of her favourite herbs to use with children, that are easy on compliance, and suitable across a broad range of conditions.

Induratio Penis Plastica: A Case for Naturopathic Treatment of Peyronie Disease

Case Study (1hr 15min)

Peyronie disease is a disorder affecting the tunica albuginea of the penis, that results in penis deformity and shortening, consequential sexual dysfunction, frequent erectile dysfunction, and psychological distress. Once thought to be a rare condition, Peyronie disease has been estimated to be present in 3% to 9% of men, with estimates as high as 20% in some populations. For such a common condition, a current limited understanding exists about its pathophysiology, and as such few validated treatment options exist, especially for men in the acute phase of the disease. For men in the stable phase of the disease, surgical options exist to correct the deformity and improve sexual functioning, but can be associated with decreased sexual sensation, reduced penile length, recurrent curvature and reduced rigidity.

In this presentation, Daniel will share a case of Peyronie disease, and the response to treatment with a comprehensive Naturopathic Medicine approach. A discussion of the condition relevant to Naturopathic clinicians will also be presented, offering Naturopaths a potential treatment pathway for this common and poorly understood male reproductive health condition.
